Water Clock (Clepsedra):
The
ancient Egyptians invented a clock to measure time at temples
since the second Millenium BC. It was used to fix the time of
prayer, and watching stars in order to fix the time of religious
occasions and festivals. The method of operating is based on the
leaking of the water filling the container through a hole near the
underneath. The container itself has eleven marks at precise
measured intervals which correspond to the twelve hours of the day
or night. Time is determined by looking at
the hole closest to it. The most important clock is that of
alabaster which discovered at Karnak Temple. It decorated with
colored reliefs of king Amenhotep the 3” in the presence of
various deities, and the constellations (Orion Jupiter Saturn, and
Venus), the names of three seasons, and the number of the twelve
months appears at the upper edge of the container. They also
divided the year into three seasons( khet) inundation (Pert)cultivation
(Shemu)summer. It was also known that the year had 365 rlays of
twelve months of thirty days of each, and the week was 10 days,
plus five days considered as festivals. They also used the Sun
Clock, which is similar to the sundial, by measuring the length of
the shadow to determine the time during the day.
